STATESVILLE (WSIC) – An off-duty Iredell County Sheriff deputy is dead following an accident involving a deputy who was on duty Wednesday afternoon.

This happened on Taylorsville Highway near Tarlton Road. Deputy Justin Betts was on duty and slowed-down to make a left turn into a parking lot. Sheriff Darren Campbell says that’s when the collision occurred with Corporal Bill Wood who was traveling in the opposite direction on his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead on scene.

WSIC’s Rockie Lynne knows both men, especially Corporal Wood who was involved with his charity Tribute to the Troops.

“Bill is one of the finest men that I’ve ever known in my life,” says Lynne.

He spoke with Corporal Wood’s wife shortly after the accident and says her focus is on taking care of their children.

Deputy Betts has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. WSIC news partner FOX 46 spoke with the Highway Patrol which says speed was not a factor in the accident. The District Attorney will be consulted as part of the investigation.

Sheriff Darren Campbell says their thoughts and prayers are with the families.
