Wireless store armed robbery suspect arrested

Statesville NC: On Monday, November 17th, 2014, Investigators with the Statesville Police Department received information that Joey Eugene Richards, W/M, matched the description of the suspect involved in the Armed Robbery at the Cricket Store on Sunday, November 16th, 2014. Richards had outstanding warrants on an unrelated incident, and was wanted for questioning in that case. As the investigation continued, it was discovered that Richards was at the Greyhound bus station located in Charlotte, N.C. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department was contacted to assist in locating Richards, and he was located and arrested on the outstanding warrants and was found to be armed with an air soft pistol. Richards was transported to Statesville Police Department for processing on the unrelated charges and questioning. During the continued investigation by the Statesville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Richards admitted to the Armed Robbery occurring at the Cricket Store on 11/16/2014.

The unrelated charges for Breaking and Entering, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle and Felony Larceny stem from a breaking and entering that occurred on November 8th. Richards was identified as the suspect who broke into the West Front Street Shell service station at 202 W. Front St. Richards broke into the business and removed a safe from inside along with keys to a 2000 Dodge Durango. Richards stole the Durango and was stopped later that night in Catawba County before the vehicle had been reported stolen. Investigators linked Richards to the break in and vehicle theft based on that encounter.

Richards was charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, First Degree Kidnapping, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and was also served with the unrelated charges of Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Breaking & Entering, and Felony Larceny after Breaking and Entering. Richards received a $250,000.00 secured bond for all charges.


Statesville NC: On Sunday, November 16th at 3:15 P.M. the Statesville Police Department responded to a reported armed at the Cricket Wireless store located at 1034 Crossroads Drive, Statesville. When the officers arrived they came in contact with the store clerk who reported the incident. The clerk advised he observed a white male wearing blue jeans, a gray sweatshirt and black boots walking around outside the store. The subject later entered the store and began looking at cell phones on a display cabinet. The suspect asked the clerk about the price of a phone then pulled a handgun from his pants and pointed it at the clerk. The suspect ordered the clerk to remove the cash drawer from the register and carry it to a room located behind the counter. The suspect then forced the clerk to provide the combination for the store safe, which he opened and removed the money from inside. The suspect also removed the money from the register drawer then had the clerk enter the bathroom. The suspect duct taped the clerk’s hands and arms and advised the clerk to remain in the bathroom. Once the clerk heard the suspect exit the store, he was able to escape from the bathroom and contact the police. At this time the clerk discovered that his keys were missing along with his vehicle that was parked near the store. The vehicle description was given out by officers on the scene and the vehicle was located abandoned behind the Statesville Furniture Gallery at 117 Turnersburg Hwy. A K-9 was brought in to conduct a track however the suspect was not located. The suspect is described as a white male approximately 6’03”, 180 lbs wearing a gray sweatshirt with hoodie, blue jeans and black work boots.
