Vehicle pursuit results in felony charges


Catawba County, NC-

Joseph Lee Rayburn (42 yoa) a Hickory resident, was arrested on 02/20/2020 around 12:53 a.m. following a traffic stop which led to a vehicle pursuit.

Rayburn was initially observed sitting in a vehicle which was stopped in the parking lot of Advent Grocery, a business closed at that hour, on 02/20/2020 around 12:21 a.m. As a deputy pulled into the store’s parking lot Rayburn pulled out and began travelling along Old Shelby Rd. During that time Rayburn was observed committing several traffic offenses which prompted a traffic stop at the intersection of Old Shelby and Mountain Grove Rd. Rayburn ultimately fled in his vehicle from the location of the traffic stop. Deputies chased Rayburn and apprehended him following a vehicle pursuit which lasted 32 minutes before ending inside the City of Newton.

Rayburn has been charged with Felony Fleeing to Allude Arrest, Possession of Methamphetamine, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resisting a Public Officer, two counts of Failing to Stop at Red Light, Driving Left of Center and Displaying a Fictitious Registration Plate. Rayburn received a $22,000.00 secured bond and has a first Appearance in District Court on 02/21/2020.

Sheriff Brown: “Our deputies, with assistance from Newton Police Department, brought this incident to a safe resolution. Another criminal in possession of drugs and guns has been taken off our streets”.
