ON 09/05/2015 AT APPROX 0825 HRS, EMS, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND OFFICERS FROM THE TROUTMAN POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO A RESIDENCE ON WINTERFLAKE DR. THE CALL WAS IN REFERENCE TO AN OVERDOSE OF A 1 YEAR OLD GIRL. UPON ARRIVAL, OFFICERS WERE INFORMED THAT THE 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF ABISHAI COX WAS ABLE TO GAIN ACCESS TO UNSECURED PILLS FROM THE MOTHER’S PURSE AND CONSUMED THEM. IN TOTAL, THE CHILD CONSUMED 1 HYDROCODONE PILL AND 7 KLONOPIN PILLS. THE MOTHER AND CHILD WERE TRANSPORTED BY EMS TO IREDELL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. DURING THE HOSPITAL VISIT, THE CHILD WAS ADMITTED BY THE EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTORS TO THE HOSPITAL FOR OVERNIGHT OBSERVATION. IREDELL COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES ALSO RESPONDED TO THE HOSPITAL AND TOOK EMERGENCY CUSTODY OF THE CHILD.
CHIEF MATTHEW SELVES STATED THAT THE TROUTMAN POLICE DEPARTMENTS CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION CONDUCTED A THROUOUGH INVESTIGATION AND PRESENTED EVIDENCE TO THE DA OFFICE. AFTER CONSULTING WITH THE IREDELL COUNY DA’s OFFICE, THE MOTHER, ABISHAI COX WAS CHARGED WITH FELONY CHILD ABUSE BY NEGLECT. MISS COX WAS ALSO CHARGED WITH SIMPLE POSSESSION OF SCH II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND SIMPLE POSSESSION OF SCH IV CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE FOR OBTAINING THE NARCOTICS ILLEGALLY. THE MAGISTRATE ISSUED A $2500/SECURED BOND.
