HAMPTONVILLE, NC (WSIC) – Two people were killed in an accident involving three tractor trailers on I-77 northbound near the Iredell-Yadkin county line early Thursday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol tells WSIC traffic was slowing in the area when a tractor trailer failed to reduce speed, causing a chain reaction.  Two people traveling in a pickup truck were killed.  Two of the tractor trailer drivers were transported to Winston-Salem for medical treatment.  The third refused treatment on-scene.

Northbound lanes of the interstate are expected to remain closed until at least 8:45 Thursday evening.  Traffic is being detoured onto US-421 south, funneled through exit 73-A, and back onto US-421 before returning to I-77.

The names of the two people killed in the accident have not been released.  The accident happened shortly after 12-noon Thursday.
