Statesville Police: Traffic stop nets precursors to methamphetamine production

PRESS RELEASE

Statesville NC: On Tuesday night, July 26, 2016, while on patrol, Statesville Police Officer Jody Johnson observed a vehicle at W. Front St. near Oakland Ave. that had several equipment violations, which then made an unsafe movement across lanes of travel. Officer Johnson conducted a traffic stop on this vehicle. The vehicle was found to have a driver and 2 occupants, all of which were acting extremely nervous. One of the occupants then advised the officer about a firearm being in the vehicle.

Other officers came to assist, and the occupants were asked to exit the vehicle. A sawed off 12 gauge shotgun and a revolver were located in the vehicle. The vehicle was also found to contain several chemicals and precursors which appeared to be used in the making of methamphetamine.

The occupants were detained while appropriate personnel were contacted to deal with the very dangerous chemicals used to make methamphetamine. Lt. B. Collins of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, and in turn contacted the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Meth Lab disposal unit. Nothing was touched or searched any further until SBI personnel arrived.

The SBI personnel arrived and conducted their investigation and properly dismantled and collected the methamphetamine precursors for destruction. All 3 occupants were taken into custody after decontamination and were charged with the following offenses:

The driver was Ricky David Chagnon II, W/M, 27 of Stony Point NC

He was charged with:

Possession of Methamphetamine
Possession of Methamphetamine precursors
Felony maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances
Possession of a weapon of mass destruction
Possession of a firearm by a felon
Carry concealed weapon
Possession of drug paraphernalia
Felony probation violation
Several vehicle & traffic violations
Outstanding Failure to appear warrants for: driving while license revoked, unsafe movement, poss. Firearm by felon, poss. Weapon of mass destruction.

Chagnon was held at the Iredell County Detention center on a $231,500.
