Statesville PD: Shots fired following basketball game

PRESS RELEASE

Statesville NC: On Saturday September 12th, 2015 at 7:20 PM the Statesville Police Department responded to Kimbrough Park in reference to shots fired. When officers arrived they came in contact with the victim who reported being shot at by an unidentified male. According to the victim, a group of individuals were playing basketball and a verbal altercation ensued. At some point the suspect, who was playing basketball, returned to his vehicle and removed a pistol from the vehicle and held it by his side. Three more individuals left the basketball court area and got into the suspects’ vehicle. The suspect threatened to shoot the victim, got inside his vehicle and began pulling away. As the suspect was leaving he fired one shot in the direction of the victim.

A bystander followed the suspect vehicle away from the scene. SPD contacted Troutman PD who located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. As a result of the traffic stop, the handgun along with two shotguns were seized from the suspect vehicle. The driver/suspect, later identified as James Michael Miller, 18 of Statesville, was taken into custody. Miller was taken before the magistrate and charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun, Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits and Communicating Threats. Miller was placed in the Iredell County Jail under a $1000.00 secured bond.
