The City of Statesville has a new finance director. Christopher (Chris) Tucker, 40, began his duties earlier this month, filling the position left vacant when former finance director Ralph Staley was promoted to Assistant City Manager/Chief Financial Officer last November.
Tucker has served as the Finance Director for the towns of Matthews, NC and Ayden, NC. In Statesville, he will oversee the City’s finance functions, including accounting, payroll, purchasing, utility billing and collections. He also will supervise city investments and ensure that the City’s accounts are in compliance with local government guidelines.
“Chris is coming to us with 14 years’ experience as a Finance Director with two local governments. He is a great addition to our team and can make an immediate impact on the projects we have underway,” said Staley.
Tucker has experience working with a public power community (Ayden) and has prepared multiple Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports for which he and his teams received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Achievement Award each time. He graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Business Administration concentrating in Financial Management and completed the UNC School of Government course on Municipal and County Administration.
“Coming to Statesville is an exciting opportunity,” said Tucker. “I feel my experiences have come together to prepare me for this position. It will present the chance to work with a larger budget across more funds. I look forward to working with the Finance staff to continue striving for excellence and transparency. I look forward to working under Ralph and learning more best practices in local government finance. The work we do is important, and we will take great pride in the level of service we provide to our citizens and stakeholders.”
A native of eastern North Carolina, Chris and his wife, Ashley, have three children, Alexandria, Greyson, and Beau. His spare time is spent with family, usually outdoors.
