CHARLOTTE, NC (WSIC) – The Chancellor of the Catholic Church’s Charlotte diocese has stepped-down from his position after the church says it found “a credible allegation of sexual misconduct” in the 1980s.
According to the diocese, Monsignor Mauricio West was Vice President for Student Affairs at Belmont Abbey College at the time of the allegations. An individual met with the lay review board in February to discuss his or her allegations.
West denies the allegations against him and will be on a leave of absence during what the Bishop calls “a period of counseling and assessment.”
Bishop Peter Jugis says the accusations did not constitute sexual abuse and did not involve a minor. It is the policy of the diocese to refer allegations to its lay review board for investigation.
“Personally, and on behalf of the Catholic Church, I extend our deepest apologies to the victim in this case and pray for all who have suffered from misconduct,” says Jugis.
“The Diocese of Charlotte is committed to taking all necessary steps to root out all inappropriate behavior and to being open and transparent about our handling of all allegations of such conduct.”
