Police: Suspect stole scrap metal 9 times

Statesville NC: On Monday July 28th, 2014, Statesville Police Officer J.T. Smith responded to a scrap metal theft at a business in the 1900 block of Hilton Dr. The property owner had encountered a person on his property that day attempting to steal scrap metal from his business. The property owner obtained the subject’s information and contacted Statesville Police.

Officer Smith followed up on the case, and obtained video from the business owner. It was discovered that this same suspect had stolen metal from this business a total of nine times between July 7th and July 25th, 2014. It was also discovered that this suspect took the metal to Gordon’s Iron and Metal each time to obtain money for the stolen metal.

Officer Smith obtained warrants on the suspect, identified as Caleb Ishmael Swanson, for one count of Felony larceny and 9 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Officer Smith located and arrested Swanson on Tuesday afternoon July 29th, 2014. Swanson was taken before a magistrate on the charges and was given a $5,000 secured bond. He was turned over to Iredell County Detention officials.
