Police continue Maggie Daniels homicide investigation

UPDATED: 9 July 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels continued today as investigators continued to follow up on tips and leads. As a result of the expanded neighborhood canvas, investigators continued conducting interviews and sorting through the information gathered from the canvas results. Investigators will continue to follow up on all tips and leads as they are reported to police.

UPDATED: 8 July 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time. Investigators worked today putting together information gathered from the previous day’s tips and leads. Investigators also planned for moving the investigation forward. Attached to this email is a photo of Maggie Daniels leaving a Wal-Mart store in Conover on Friday, June 27th. Police are asking that anyone who may have seen Maggie at Wal-Mart in the afternoon of June 27th please contact the Newton Police Department at 828-465-7430.

UPDATED: 7 July, 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time. Investigators continued working this case over the long holiday weekend resulting in several goods days of work. Investigators continued to make contact with residents and neighbors in the area and conduct interviews. Follow ups are also being conducted on all tips and leads that have been reported. Police are requesting that any businesses or private residents in the area of Ms. Daniel’s apartment or from 15th St to 20th St on N. Main Ave that may have recorded exterior surveillance cameras from the dates of June 27th & 28th to please contact the Newton Police Department.

UPDATED: 3 July, 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time. Today investigators continued with a canvass of the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Officers will continue working this case over the July 4th holiday and weekend. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the City of Newton Police at 828-465-7430.

UPDATED: 2 July 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time. Today investigators revisited Windsor Apartments to continue with a neighborhood canvas of the area. Police are seeking information from neighbors in and around Windsor Apartments who may have seen something not matter how consequential.

UPDATED: 1 July 2014, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time. Investigators are working on canvassing the area and continuing with interviews of friends and acquaintances of Maggie Daniels. We ask that if anyone has information regarding the death of Maggie Daniels please contact the Newton Police Department at 828-465-7430.

UPDATED: On 30 June 2014, the Newton Police Department received results from an autopsy performed on Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Daniels. As a result of these findings, we are changing the status of this investigation from an unattended death to a homicide investigation. The cause of death will not be released at this time. We have conducted multiple interviews with additional interviews forthcoming. The investigation is continuing.

On 28 June 2014, at 9:07 am the Newton Police Department responded to a reported “damage to property” at Windsor Apartments located at 100 W. 17th St Newton. At 10:37 am, while gathering information for the “damage to property” report, officers were alerted by neighbors to an unresponsive female in apartment #21. Officers immediately requested emergency medical response and ran to apartment #21 to assist. When officers entered the apartment with neighbors they discovered a female victim deceased. The victim has been identified as Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Daniels of 100 W. 17th St. Apt 21, Newton NC. Ms. Daniels was employed by Newton-Conover City Schools as a counselor at Discovery High School. At this time, this case is being treated as a death investigation just as all other unattended death cases. Newton Police did request and is receiving assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Newton Police hopes to have more information after an autopsy is completed which is scheduled for Monday, June 30th. At this time there is no further information to report.
