Plane that went missing from Statesville involved in fatal crash

   

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WSIC) – A plane that departed the Statesville Regional Airport Monday morning headed for Davie County was involved in a fatal crash.

The pilot is identified as Guy Maher, a source confirms to WSIC.

Deborah Horne with the Rowan County Fire Marshall’s Office tells WSIC the accident happened in the northwest part of the county. Maher was the only person on board and is described as a well-known member of the community.

The Statesville Police Department was notified of the missing plane around 9:00 Monday morning. The owner had authorized the pilot to fly the plane to the Twin Lakes Airport which is near the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 801 in eastern Davie County off Fork Bixby Road. The flight usually takes about fifteen minutes. Friends of the owner and the Civil Air Patrol were both involved in search efforts throughout the day. Horne says she received a call regarding the plane being located around 4:00 Monday afternoon.
