MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WSIC) – Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams is volunteering with a small North Carolina Police Department while on administrative leave.
Williams was given permission to work with the Taylortown Police Department, according to Mooresville spokeswoman Kim Sellers. Taylortown is located just outside of Pinehurst.
Williams was placed on administrative leave with pay in early June. The town contracted with an outside agency to investigate claims of a hostile work environment. A supervisor was also placed on leave.
Interim Town Manager Ryan Rase appointed Ron Campurciani as Acting Police Chief. Campurciani is a 34-year veteran of law enforcement, having served most recently as the Executive Director of the Western Massachusetts Police Chief Association and prior to that as Chief of Police for West Springfield, Massachusetts.
“Based on the recommendation of our outside investigators and information I have reviewed to date, I made the decision to appoint an Acting Police Chief to enact immediate change in our Police Department,” said Manager Rase. “I am comfortable in the knowledge and ability of Mr. Campurciani to lead this temporary situation.”
A call to Williams Thursday for comment on his volunteer role has not yet been returned.
