Mooresville High School football player dies following accident on campus

MOORESVILLE, NC (WSIC) – A Mooresville High School student is dead following an accident on campus Saturday afternoon, according to the school district.

According to a Facebook Post on the Mooresville High School Bluedevils Page, Sharpe fell from a pickup truck while working on a service project with other student athletes at the school’s Magnolia Campus.

“I was just devastated,” says Mooresville High School student Elie Brinson who is friends with the victim’s sister. She joined other students for a prayer vigil Sunday night just hours before Sharpe died.

“Gavin was a very strong believer and his whole family (is), so it was beautiful. There were people praying, there were people crying, worshiping. There was really an amazing (outpouring) of love from everyone in the community.”

Sharpe was a rising sophomore, according to Brinson.

In a statement, the school district promised to keep the Sharpe family in its thoughts and prayers. Additional counseling services will be available for students and staff as the new school year begins.
