Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that on 10-16-2015 Sgt. C.W. Bentley of the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement team conducted a traffic stop on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee on Salisbury Hwy in Statesville due to the registered owner’s license being revoked. Bentley approached the vehicle and advised the driver of the violation. Bentley determined that the vehicle’s registered owner was seated in the passenger seat. Bentley then checked both individuals information and determined that the driver had a valid license. During this time Bentley discovered that the registered owner, Mr. Michael Mashburn, had a history of drug and alcohol violations. Bentley returned the individuals information and began to speak with Mr. Mashburn about the possibility of there being illegal contraband inside his vehicle. During this time Mashburn admitted that he had marijuana inside the vehicle along with a marijuana smoking pipe. A vehicle search resulted in seizing a plastic container containing marijuana and a marijuana smoking pipe. Mashburn was then charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
