Man killed, sister injured following west Statesville crash


STATESVILLE, N.C. (WSIC NEWS) – A man is dead and his sister seriously injured following a west Statesville crash Sunday night, according to the Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on Westminster Drive at Cliffwood Drive near I-40 and Highway 90. Trooper Allen with the Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Statesville resident Sedrick Sloan was going 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control and ran-off the road. According to Allen, neither he nor his passenger were wearing a seat belt. Both were ejected from the vehicle. Sloan died at the scene.

His sister, 23-year-old Zhana Vargas of Statesville, was trapped underneath the car following crash. She was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in serious condition.

The two were traveling in a red 2006 Toyota Scion. According to Sloan, drugs and alcohol were not involved. The crash happened at 5:00 Sunday night.
