Lincolnton, NC – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team is now certified in Advanced Swift Water Rescue.

The dive team began training in June 0f 2018 and completed certification in December of 2018. The eight-member squad trained on the Nantahala River near Bryson City and the South Fork River in Lincoln County. To achieve the Advance Swift Water certification, the team trained in boat handling, rope rescue techniques, victim management, search management and went through refresher training in white water survival.

The refresher training was for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team which completed Basic White Water Rescue in 2016. That training included surviving white water, hydrology of water, basic boat techniques, ropes and knots, and terminology.

LCSO Special Operations Sgt. Trent Carpenter said, “State law gives the responsibility of locating missing persons to law enforcement whether the person is on dry land or missing from a flood or water event. Therefore, having deputies capable of conducting such searches is an asset to our county and its current Swift Water Team which is sponsored by Lincoln County Emergency Management and East Lincoln Fire Department.”
