Iredell County Animal Services has confirmed a case of rabies in Iredell County. This case involved a skunk contacting 2 dogs in the area of Cove Gap Rd off of Midway Rd.

Iredell County Health Department reminds the public to avoid contact with stray animals. These animals could be infected with rabies. Rabies is transmitted through the saliva or bite of a rabid animal. Abnormal behavior seen in rabid animals may include: overly friendly behavior, aggressive behavior, uncoordinated movement or appearance of illness. Domestic animals with rabies may be aggressive or lethargic. It is also possible for an animal to carry rabies and not yet display symptoms.

It is important to make sure your pet has a current rabies vaccine that will prevent them from acquiring rabies. In Iredell County, there is a $75.00 citation per animal for owners who do not have their dog, cat or ferret immunized against rabies.

If a pet is up to date on its rabies vaccine and is exposed to a rabid animal, the vaccinated animal must receive a booster vaccination within 5 days of the exposure. If they do not receive the booster within 5 days of the exposure they will either be euthanized (put to sleep) or quarantined for six months.
