Harmony man drowns swimming in western NC lake

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad, Cashiers Fire Department and Jackson County Emergency Management were dispatched to the Pines Recreation Area on Lake Glenville at 1965 Pine Creek Road, Glenville, NC on May 26, 2019 shortly after 7 p.m. in regards to swimmer that had went under water and not resurfaced. Upon arrival, interviews of friends and bystanders determined the swimmer had jumped off a fishing pier and attempted to swim back to a designated swimming area at the Pines. Shortly after jumping off the fishing pier, the swimmer became distressed and called out for help. A witness attempted to help the struggling swimmer but was unable to bring the endangered swimmer to the shore. The swimmer went under water and did not resurface. Rescue divers from Henderson County Rescue Squad were contacted for their assistance in recovery of the body. The deceased swimmer was located and recovered from the lake around 11:42 p.m.

Deceased is Marquise Maurice Dukes, DOB 4/11/1998. Mount Bethel Road, Harmony, NC.
