East Iredell man accused in string of battery thefts

PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that on January 27th, 2017 a report was filed with the Sheriff’s Office for larceny of batteries from two logging trucks that were parked on the side of Salisbury Hwy. On January 28th, 2017 a report was filled with the Sheriff’s Office for larceny of batteries from several farm tractors that were parked on a farm in the area of Barry Oak Road. On February 2nd, 2017 another report was filed with the Sheriff’s Office for larceny of additional batteries from another piece of farm machinery in the area of Barry Oak Road. A total of 10 batteries were stolen from this victims with a value of $1,220.00.

Detective Sergeant Wesley Gregory was assigned each of these cases. During the course of the investigation it was determined that Steven Leo Antonio Munoz was responsible for the larcenies over a time frame of a few days. Munoz was confronted about the larceny of the batteries, and during an interview he admitted to stealing batteries from a farm in Iredell County. In addition, Munoz admitted to stealing batteries from a farm in Rowan County on two different occasions as well.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were contacted about the larceny and was given a suspect of Steven Munoz. Detectives with Rowan County advised that they would be following up with the victim in their County. Rowan County Detectives reported that 13 various batteries was stolen in their county.

Detectives were able to locate a total of 11 batteries that had been sold to a business in Statesville by Munoz. Munoz has been charged for sealing the stolen batteries to the business. When Munoz sold the batteries to the business he provided a false name but the business owner obtained a tag number on the vehicle he drove that assisted in the investigation.

Munoz was arrested and taken before an Iredell County Magistrate, where he was charged with (2) counts of Felony Breaking and/or Entering to a Motor Vehicle, (4) counts of Misdemeanor Larceny, and (2) counts of Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. Munoz appeared in court for his first appearance on Monday the 13th day of February, 2017 at 9:00am. Munoz was currently on probation for previous charges at the time of his arrest, and he is now being held in the Iredell County Jail under a $15,000.00 Secured Bond. There will likely be additional charges from Rowan County Sheriff’s Office in the few days.

In 2016, Steven Munoz was criminally charged with (1) count of Felony Breaking and/or Entering to a Motor Vehicle, (1) count of Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, (2) counts of Felony Larceny, and (1) count of Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. Those charges were consolidated on January 30th, 2017, and Munoz plead guilty to a lesser degree of Misdemeanor Larceny. Munoz was placed on supervised probation for 24 months.
