The owner of Statesville’s Tilley Harley Davidson is dead following a single-motorcycle accident Friday night on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
National Park Service Ranger Joseph Darling says 78-year-old Don Tilley was pronounced dead on-scene. His wife Robinette was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The accident happened approximately seven miles southeast of Asheville at 7:50 p.m. Darling says the accident was witnessed by others traveling with the couple. The cause is under investigation.
According to Tilley’s website, Don and his wife started the Statesville business in 1972. Tilley was regularly involved with, or sponsoring, some type of racing. His career also included time working for “The King” Richard Petty.
“Don will truly be missed by everybody in the community,” says Jeff Phillips, who is President of Rolling Thunder, North Carolina Chapter Two. Tilley Harley Davidson has been a supporter of the organization.
The Tilley Harley Davidson website asks the public to keep the family in prayer.
