Following concerns from local governing bodies, the NCDOT yesterday issued a letter concerning the I-77 toll lanes.

The letter was addressed to Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain and says an amendment to the long range transportation plan adopted in 2013 included a future widening of I-77.

Rather than have bidders for the toll lane project amend their bids, the NCDOT opted to let winning bidder file a claim for revenue impact if the freeway was ever widened with general purpose lanes.

The DOT does not place a high likelihood on that happening, and makes it clear the freeway could not be easily widened with general purpose lanes under the present rules for funding.
