Deputies called to New Year’s Eve stabbing in Cleveland

On 12/31/2016, at 0400hrs Rowan County deputies were called to 180 Apex Lane, Cleveland, NC in response to a reported stabbing assault. Deputies arrived and found the dead body of a black male who was later identified as 36 year old Altereck Rashad Shields. The victim, Shields, was found in the backyard of this residence. Rowan County Sheriff’s Office CID Detectives responded and began the investigation. During the course of this investigation, Detectives discovered that Shields probably died as the result of injuries from a knife. Detectives discovered that the victim was involved in a physical fight at this residence just prior to his death.

As a result of the investigation, 37 year old Jermail Blake was identified as the suspect. Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Detectives relayed the details of the investigation to the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office. After consultation Rowan County Sheriff’s Detectives obtained Felony Voluntary Manslaughter charges on Jermail Blake. Blake was arrested and placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond.
