Cyclist dies following east Statesville crash



NEWTON – On Thursday, 3 October, at approximately 7:20 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and is investigating a fatal collision in Iredell County on US 64 near the intersection of River Hill Road. A 2003 Chevrolet passenger car was traveling east on US 64 and entered the left turn lane behind a bicyclist who was also traveling east and had entered the left turn lane. The Chevrolet collided with the bicyclist who was ejected.

The Chevrolet was being operated by Adam Michael Lackey, 34, of Statesville; he was not injured. The bicycle was being operated by William Kevin Dillon, 48, of Statesville. Dillon was critically injured and transported by EMS to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem where he later died. No impairment is suspected and no charges have been filed at this time.
