STATESVILLE, N.C. (WSIC NEWS) – A fatal crash closed I-40 westbound near the Old Mocksville Road exit in Statesville Wednesday afternoon.

An SUV was stopped in the right lane due to a brush fire along the interstate. According to the Highway Patrol, it was hit from behind by a tractor trailer that swerved in an attempt to avoid the stopped traffic. Investigators say the tractor trailer also hit a pick-up which was pushed into another tractor trailer.

The driver of the SUV, Ward Beecher Miller, 65, of Winston-Salem, died at the scene. A passenger in the SUV and the driver of the pick-up were transported to the hospital by EMS. Their conditions are not currently available. According to the Highway Patrol, the tractor trailer was being driven by Charles Marlow Jr., 51, of Hopewell, Pennsylvania.

Traffic was being diverted onto Highway 64 at the county line in east Iredell creating a traffic headache on both the interstate and 64. An NCDOT map also showed onlooker delays occurring on the eastbound side.

Westbound traffic was backed-up to the Iredell-Davie line shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
