Convicted felon accused of stealing firearms

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a larceny report on Friday, May 13, 2016. The report stated that an Apple Ipad, an Apple Ipad mini, and a Kindle Fire were stolen from a residence on Bauer Drive Statesville, NC. The report listed Leland Herrera as the suspect. It was found that he is a relative of the victim(s). Through further investigation, it was found that two firearms had also been taken from the residence on Bauer Drive Statesville, NC on a different date. The Apple Ipad was recovered and evidence showed that Leland Herrera was in possession of the Ipad. Once Herrera was confronted regarding the investigation, he cooperated and turned over one of the firearms he still had in his possession. Herrera was also able to retrieve the second firearm that had already been sold to another person on the street.

Herrera was found guilty for the offense of Felony Breaking and Entering for an incident that occurred on October 21, 2013. This conviction made Herrera a convicted felon. Herrera was also on supervised probation, here in Iredell County, at the time of the incidents.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2016, Herrera was arrested and charged with Possession of Firearm by Felon, Larceny of a Firearm, Felony Larceny, and Obtaining Property by False Pretense. Herrera was given a $10,000.00 secured bond by Magistrate Boyd and a court date of May 18, 2016.
