UPDATE: Interim Statesville Police Chief Joe Barone indicated in a message Wednesday afternoon that he could not comment on the situation in any way, but noted that he would issue a statement when he was able.

The City of Statesville is not saying a word right now about a report alleging that a police officer assaulted a man in hand cuffs last month.

WCCB in Charlotte reports that a credible source informed them of the alleged incident and said the officer has been placed on paid leave.

Messages sent to Interim Chief Joe Barone yesterday were not returned.

A call to City Attorney Eddie Gains was also not returned.

City Spokeswoman Nancy Davis says Barone was to meet with Gaines yesterday and expected a statement would be issued.

At this point, no statement has been released.

We’re working with WCCB on this story and will be sharing available information as we investigate.
