Celebrations of Black History Month set at Unity Center

As celebration of Black History Month, a series of events will take place this week at The Unity Center.

All of the following events will be held at the center, which is the old Unity High School, 1145 Salisbury Road in Statesville.

Here is a look at the events:

The Class of 1960, hosting its 60th Anniversary, will be highlighted at the event. In addition, the Hybrid Class of 1970, hosting its 50th anniversary, will also be noted.

Career Fair: A college and career fair promoting the Historic Black Colleges and Universities will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will include an introduction of some HBCUs and their alumni.

Old School Reunion and Dance: This is designed to be a networking event, Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. The Old School Reunion is for reconnecting with classmates and friends of yesterday — elementary, high school and college alumni of the HBCUs. Wear school colors.

In addition, the members of fraternities and sororities will be recognized, so wear sweaters and colors.

Joy Stiver Gospel Program: A special gospel program will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. The event will honor and pay tribute to Joy Stiver. The Children’s Bible Mission missionary monitored the Bible verse ministry program in the Iredell County School System from 1950 into the 1980s.

All former students and Bible School campers are asked to come out and honor and pay tribute to Stiver.

For more information on all of the events, call Burgess Bailey at 704-500-1621.
