Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: Friday November 16, 2018 Bernard Edward Miller called West Iredell Middle School, and spoke to school staff regarding what he perceived to be a bullying incident.

During this phone conversation, Mr. Miller mentioned bringing a gun to West Iredell Middle School and “handling the problem himself”. Deputy Antonio Lawrence who serves at the School Resource Officer at West Iredell Middle was made aware of this threat and he documented it by filing an Incident Report containing its details.

The case was assigned to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Threat Assessment Investigator, Dallas Hicks. Detective Hicks reviewed the report and subsequently obtained a warrant for arrest for Bernard Edward Miller for the offence of communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property.

Miller was arrested on December 15, 2018 and taken before Iredell County Magistrate R. Imes where he received a secured bond of 5,000.00 dollars.

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that this type of threat toward any school in Iredell County will not be tolerated and will be investigated to its fullest extent. He noted that this is a prime example of how School Resource Officers and our Threat Assessment Investigator work hand in hand to help keep our schools safe.
