A single vehicle crash claimed the life of a Fire Chief Sunday morning in Iredell County according to NC Highway Patrol.
WSIC news partner FOX 46 reports the crash took place on I-40 near 143 MM around 9:20 a.m.
The driver in this crash has been identified as Fire Chief Richard Sales of the Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department in Asheville, NC.
Sales was driving his 2010 GMC Yukon when he ran off the right side of I-40 east through a ditch bank and median onto the westbound side of I-40 off the road and hit a tree causing the car to be engulfed in flames.
Sales did not make it out of the car and his death will be recognized as a line of duty death. Sales was on his way to a conference in Wilmington to accept an award on behalf of his department.
It is unclear what caused the crash. The investigation continues.
