Statesville City Council will meet Monday night, August 20, at 7 p.m.  This is a public comment meeting. Persons desiring to speak should sign up upon arrival.  The public comment period is held at the beginning of the meeting and speakers are given three minutes to talk.

Prior to the meeting, Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. in a special workshop with the Stormwater Advisory Commission to review their findings and recommendations.  This meeting is open to the public and will take place in the third floor conference room of City Hall.

On the regular agenda, Council will hold a public hearing and consider approving an economic development incentive for a Statesville business known as “Project Knox”.  The incentive is for a five-year, 80% grant back on the improved tax value created by the project, estimated to be $58,000.  This project will invest $3 million in a building. Council will also be asked to consider an additional grant in the same amount if the company maintains a new $20 million or more taxable storage inventory for another five years.  Russ Rogerson, Statesville Regional Development Executive, will make the presentation.  Council is using an incentive formula, established many years ago, to assist companies wanting to make a sizeable investment in Statesville.

A seldom noticed metal structure, used to reinforce the wall of a brick building on E. Broad St., could become another venue for public art if City Council approves Downtown Statesville’s request Monday night.  DSDC is proposing to use the metal bracing structure as a gallery to showcase a variety of local art and historic photos printed on 10’ x 6’ mesh material.  The City owns the metal structure and will be asked to provide upkeep of it and the plant growth around it.  The Art Banner Wall will be on the west side of the Nu-Way Shoes building, 114 W. Broad St.  DSDC hopes to have the art installed in time for the Sept. 15 Art Crawl.

Fire Chief Spencer Lee will present newly promoted Battalion Chief Joshua Smith to City Council, and introduce newly hired firefighters Zachary Hinson, Wesley Long, Adam Sparks, Joseph Taylor and Brandon McLain.

City Council will meet in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 227 S. Center St.  The meeting is open to the public.  The Pre-Agenda meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the third floor conference room.

City Council meetings can be watched live on Spectrum Government Channel 20.
