Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Thursday, August 8, 2018 the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a report from family members concerning elderly exploitation and embezzlement. The reporting parties advised they had reasons to believe their grandmother was being financially scammed by her caretaker. The case was assigned to Detective C. Scannella of the Economic Crimes Unit for further investigation.
During the course of the investigation Detective Scannella obtained documentation showing several monetary discrepancies in the victim’s banking accounts. Detective Scannella worked with various local banks to obtain account records as well as surveillance footage. In the footage, the suspect Donnetta Watkins, was captured on video making multiple transactions without the victim’s permission at times when the victim was in a nursing care facility.
Based on all the evidence gathered during the investigation, Detective Scannella was able to obtain six felony warrants on Donnetta Corry Watkins, three for Felony Embezzlement/ Trustee, and three for Felony Exploitation of Disabled/ Elderly. The total amount taken from the victim was 47,663.25 dollars.
On Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019, Watkins turned herself to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. She was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where she was served with the warrants and was issued a 50,000.00 dollar secured bond by Magistrate D. Chambers.
