The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Thursday morning, announcing an arrest in the Hugh Lee Moose homicide case. Watch the full press conference below:
A Pennsylvania man is charged with murder in the investigation of the January 2017 death of Statesville businessman Hugh Lee Moose.
Mark Pinkerton of Meadville, Pennsylvania is accused by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office of killing the 80-year-old while visiting family that lives nearby. Investigators say Pinkerton was looking for money when he committed the crime and asked another individual for help, but was turned down.
The person who was asked to assist in the burglary was afraid to approach the Sheriff’s Office with information, but confided in another individual who contacted authorities late Friday or early Saturday. Based on that information, a nationwide search was conducted to find Pinkerton with investigators eventually traveling to Pennsylvania in order to meet him.
Sheriff Darren Campbell says Pinkerton admitted to killing Moose when interviewed. He has now been charged with murder and is awaiting a hearing at which he will have the opportunity to waive extradition or fight the process in court. Major Andy Poteat anticipates Pinkerton will waive extradition and be returned to North Carolina in less than a week.
“(It’s) unbelievable after fifteen months to be able to provide that closure to the family,” said Campbell in a press conference Thursday morning. He had spoken to relatives of Hugh Moose just prior to addressing the media, which he praised for helping keep the case in front of the public.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Pinkerton is a convicted felon for burglary in Pennsylvania and was released earlier this month from a sentence for light crimes.
