Concord man with outstanding warrants for murder arrested following traffic stop in Catabwa County



Newton – On Thursday, 20 June 2019 at approximately 9:20 a.m., Trooper B.K. Perkins was on patrol in Catawba County on I-40 East near the 121 mile marker when he stopped a 2014 Volkswagen Passat for speeding 89 mph in a 65 mph zone. The driver, Dezmond Tyrell Leach, 25, of Concord, was charged with speeding, a seatbelt violation, failing to pull to the right upon approach of a police vehicle, and failing to carry a valid driver’s license.

During the course of the stop, it was determined that the passenger, Ajenee Semuell Forte, 26, of Concord, had outstanding warrants out of Mecklenburg County for murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The defendants complied with troopers during the traffic stop and investigation. Assistance was provided by a K-9 unit from the Hickory Police Department. No contraband was seized. Troopers cleared the traffic stop by 10:20 a.m.

Mr. Leach is being held under a $500 bond at the Catawba County Detention Center with a court date of 24 June 2019 in Newton.

Mr. Forte is being held without bond on the murder charge and is under an $80,000 bond on the attempted robbery charge at the Catawba County Detention Center with a court date of 11 July 2019 in Newton.
