PRESS RELEASE

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, May 30, 2019) – The front porch of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s South Division may look more like a consignment shop right now, but that’s because they recovered property stolen in numerous cases. So far, Stephen Thomas, DOB: 12/06/1984, and Joanna Olivieri, DOB: 05/30/1969, have been charged for their involvement in four of these cases.

Beginning in late April, furniture began to disappear from the front porches of homes in the South Division. Officers in the South Division began working to identify how exactly these chairs were walking off. Chairs do have legs, but we know none of these walked away of their own volition because surveillance video footage of one incident showed two suspects remove furniture from a front porch of a residence. Officers began working with the community and were able to identify these suspects as Thomas and Olivieri. Continued investigation resulted in officers locating a large amount of furniture; this furniture was taken to the South Division office until it can be returned to the rightful owners.

Thomas is currently charged with two counts of felony possession of stolen property, misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor possession of stolen property. Olivieri is currently charged with misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor possession of stolen property. Investigation into numerous, additional cases are active and ongoing, and investigators expect additional charges to be placed on Thomas and Olivieri.

The community’s assistance in these case was a crucial step in their clearance. The CMPD asks the community to continue notifying us of any information known about these cases or any other case. Notification can be made by calling 911; notification can also be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visiting their website at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
