Statesville police officer shot in back

Statesville police are investigating the shooting of a Statesville officer that occurred Friday night, June 15, on Fifth Street around 11 p.m. Officer Tyler Horn was shot once in the back and taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released early this morning. The bullet proof vest he was wearing took the brunt of the shot.

Statesville Police Chief Joe Barone said that two officers were on routine foot patrol around Raleigh Ave. and Fifth St. when someone stepped out of the shadows behind them and fired multiple rounds in their direction, hitting Horn in the back. A suspect has not been identified at this time.

Statesville officers and detectives, state and federal law enforcement officers and other members of the Violent Crime Collaborative are currently on the scene processing evidence and interviewing people in the area. Iredell County Sheriffs deputies and Troutman Police also responded and provided assistance.
