Sheriff’s Office: Student charged with arson after video posted to Snapchat

PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at approximately 1:15 pm, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers at Lake Norman High School, Deputy B. Whitlow, and Deputy R. Mountain were alerted by school administration to respond to a fire on the second story 400 Hallway boy’s bathroom of the school.

When Deputy Whitlow arrived in the area he discovered the hallway filling with smoke. Deputy Whitlow called for the fire department to respond to 186 Doolie Road Mooresville, Lake Norman High School. The fire was contained to a trashcan in the bathroom.

Due to the smoke activating fire alarms throughout the school the students, and staff were immediately evacuated. Additional Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Patrol units arrived on the scene to assist with the evacuation process, and investigating the fire.

Because the incident was videoed by a juvenile student, and posted to his “SNAPCHAT” social network, the video immediately became viral.

Sheriff’s Office investigators quickly identified the suspect who set the fire, and the person who videotaped the incident.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has forwarded their investigation findings to Juvenile Services for Felony Arson charges due to the suspect’s age. The student has been suspended from Lake Norman High School.
