Sheriff’s Office says early morning chase approached 100 MPH

PRESS RELEASE

Lincolnton, NC – A vehicle chase with speed approaching 100 miles an hour led to a wreck and foot chase of the suspect.

Sheriff’s Sgt. D. Cline was traveling west on Highway 73 around 1:45 a.m. (December 9, 2019) when he got behind a white Ford Explorer. As he approached the vehicle the driver sped away at a high rate of speed. The deputy activated his blue lights and siren as the vehicle turned from Highway 73 onto South Pilot Knob Road. The vehicle continued on a high rate of speed before going south on Business Highway 16 and then crashing at the entrance of Ben McLain Lane, Stanley, NC.

The driver jumped from the vehicle and ran toward a nearby home with deputies following on foot. The suspect ran into a wooded area behind a residence before being apprehended by several Sheriff’s deputies. During the apprehension Deputy M. Farra had caught up with the suspect in the woods but suffered a broken arm while trying to detain him.

The suspect, Jhamari Keishon Sowell, 21, of 900 block of Ben McLain Lane, Stanley, NC was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger, speeding, driving while impaired, no operator’s license and failing to stop for a stop sign.

Lincoln County EMS was called to evaluate Deputy Farra and Sowell. Sowell was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia while Deputy Farra was transported to Atrium Health – Lincoln for treatment.

Warrants on Sowell will be served after he is released from the hospital. Additional charges are possible.
