Rowan detention officer accused of smuggling marijuana into jail

On Wednesday, July 11, 2018, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer was arrested for multiple counts related to the smuggling of drugs into the Rowan County Detention Center. In June 2018, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Division and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) began an investigation of Raymond Heath Moore, age 32, a detention officer working in the main detention facility. Moore had been hired on February 11, 2018. Information obtained during the investigation showed that Moore was bringing drugs, tobacco and lighters into the facility for a preset fee. After reviewing video surveillance in the detention center and interviewing inmates, a search warrant was obtained on July 11, 2018, for Moore, his vehicle and his residence, located in the 200 block of Correll Street in Landis, North Carolina. Around 8:30 p.m. investigators executed the search warrant at the detention center, searched Moore, his vehicle and the residence. Evidence was uncovered during the search and investigation which confirmed the suspicions that Moore was smuggling contraband into the facility and providing it to as many as four inmates. On at least five occasions, the contraband was marijuana. Moore also brought tobacco and lighters into the facility for inmates. Moore was immediately terminated.

Moore was charged with conspiracy to deliver marijuana, delivery of marijuana, possess with intent to deliver marijuana, and providing marijuana at the Rowan County Detention Center. Bond was set at $40,000 and Moore was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be brought against Moore and other suspects.
