MOORESVILLE, NC (WSIC) – The Mooresville Police Department has identified the man it says shot and killed an officer during a Highway 150 traffic stop late Saturday night.
Chief Damon Williams says Michael Yovany Aldana, 28 of Mooresville, was an individual law enforcement had been familiar with. Investigators say he fled the Highway 150 (West Plaza Drive) scene near Talbert Road and went to a nearby apartment where he shot himself. He was found deceased by officers who entered the apartment during their investigation.
“Utterly devastated. That’s the only word I can really think about to describe how some of us are feeling in this community,” said Mayor Miles Atkins in tears during a Sunday morning press conference.
Investigators have not yet released a motive in the case.
Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams is asking the community to step-forward and show support for officers in the coming week. He says the agency is angry, hurt, and sad.
“They’re going to need to know that you as a community care about how they’re feeling and what they’re feeling.”
