Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff Bill Beam has identified the man killed during an officer involved shooting Friday afternoon. (November 7, 2019)
The man is identified as Ray Lee Correll, 38, of 1527 Westdale Lane, Lincolnton, NC. Deputies were dispatched to a residence at 1527 Westdale Lane, Lincolnton, NC at 5:42 p.m. after the Lincoln County Communications Center received a report that man was in the front yard of the home threatening to shoot himself.
The man, a white male, had a gun to his head when officers arrived on the scene. He continued to threaten the deputies and fired shots into the ground. He then rushed toward the officers pointing his handgun at them and they returned fire.
Sheriff Beam said his officers are trained to deescalate out of control situations but the man rushed our officers and was a short distance away from them when he was shot.
The three Baker District deputies involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The State Bureau of Investigation was called in and is completing an investigation into the incident.
Sheriff Beam said “Our condolences go out to the family of man who died. It’s a tragedy, not only a tragedy for them but a tragedy for my officers because they will have to live with this for the rest of their days in their law enforcement career.”
A debriefing will be held during the upcoming week for officers and emergency personnel who were on the scene.
