Man accused of trying to hit officer with vehicle ahead of Mooresville shooting

PRESS RELEASE

MOORESVILLE, NC: At approximately 11:30 p.m., Sunday evening, Mooresville Police received a suspicious vehicle complaint at Mooresville Fire-Rescue Station #3, 1023 Shearers Road. Officer Sheldon responded and located two vehicles on the property with multiple occupants. As Officer Sheldon was conducting his investigation, one of the vehicles attempted to flee and accelerated toward him. Officer Sheldon drew his service weapon and fired several rounds to stop the assault. No one was struck by the gun fire and the driver was taken into custody at the scene.

The driver, Jeffrey Daniel Stewart, 27, of Burlington NC, has been charged with Resist, Delay, and Obstruct an Officer, Reckless Driving to Endanger, and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill. Stewart is currently being held at the Iredell County Jail under a $100,000 bond.

Officer Sheldon was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave per departmental policy, pending further investigation. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
