Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Tuesday April 10, 2018, a report was filed with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office after a student at Lake Norman High School received threatening text messages from multiple unknown numbers.

Detective D. Stikeleather with the Criminal Investigation Division was assigned to investigate these incidents. It was discovered early in the investigation, a second student had also received a threatening message.

During the course of the investigation detectives learned the phone numbers from the incoming messages were false or “spoof” numbers. Detectives served several search warrants for electronic evidence collected by the telecommunications companies the threats were sent by, and received through.

Based on these records it was determined one of the students, Michael Bryce Kelly, who was also a current student at Lake Norman High School, received a threatening message was also the sender of the messages. A Felony Arrest Warrant for Kelly’s arrest was issued for one count of Making a False Report of Mass Violence on Educational Property.

Kelly was arrested without incident and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where Magistrate M. Nethken issued Michael Bryce Kelly a $100,000.00 dollars secured bond. In addition to this new charge, Michael Bryce Kelly has pending charges for Making a False Report of Mass Violence on Educational Property in May of 2017 and Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer in February of 2017.

Sheriff Campbell also said, “We have made it abundantly clear time and time again, we will not stand for this type of behavior or the disrupting it causes to our schools and students”.
