Lincoln Sheriff’s Office: Man opens fire at business, owner returns fire

Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a shots fired call at a business in Denver around 5:40 p.m. on June 13, 2019.

When they arrived on the scene officers found that Emery Demario McQuiller, 39, of Charlotte, NC had driven to Chemistry Lab Paint and Fab shop at 422 N. NC 16 Business Highway from Charlotte. When he arrived he opened fire with a 9mm handgun at employees through an open door. He then entered the business and fired another shot.

The owner, Paul Roach, retrieved a shotgun from his office and shot at the suspect causing him to flee the business. Deputies searched the area and found the suspect hiding in the restroom of a nearby restaurant where he was taken into custody.

McQuiller was slightly injured during the exchange of gunfire and received several small pellets in the face and neck. He was treated for his injuries at Atrium Health – Lincoln.

McQuiller is charged with six counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and one count each of shooting into occupied property and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $502,000 secured bond.
