Lincoln County woman accused of assaulting boyfriend

Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a physical domestic incident at 11:00 p.m. on September 19, 2019, where a man was injured.

The incident occurred at a residence in the 3500 block of Rhyne Forest Road, Iron Station, NC. When officers arrived on the scene they encountered a male subject who told them his girlfriend, Tonya Leigh Poteat, 51, had assaulted him.

The victim told deputies that when Poteat left the scene she took his wallet and cash and several sets if keys. Deputies transported the victim to the magistrate’s office where he took out charges for one misdemeanor count each of simple assault, larceny and communicating threats. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Detective Matt Burgess also charged the woman with one felony count of assault by strangulation. She was arrested at a residence on Sadler Road and taken before a Lincoln County magistrate who set a no bond hold because of domestic violence.

Injuries observed on the victim were consistent with that of someone being choked and assaulted. The male was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he was treated for contusions, abrasions, and a cervical strain.

The incident is still under investigation.
