Highway Patrol says Trooper seriously injured in crash with impaired driver



NEWTON – On Sunday, 15 September at approximately 10:12 p.m., a NC State Highway Patrol member was involved in a collision on NC 115 near Damascus Church Road and the Broadway Volunteer Fire Department in Wilkes County. Trooper Jonathan G. Barnes was on patrol and traveling south on NC 115. A 2005 Buick Lacrosse was traveling north on NC 115, crossed the centerline, and collided head-on with the patrol vehicle. Trooper Barnes was seriously injured and transported by EMS to the hospital.

The driver of the Buick, Luis Castillo, 37, of North Wilkesboro, was also seriously injured and transported by EMS to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem. He has been charged with Driving While Impaired and the results of a blood test are pending.

Trooper Barnes, 31, is a 5-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol assigned to Troop F, District 2 (Wilkes County)
