Charlotte Man Arrested on Lincoln County Theft Charges

Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives have charged a Charlotte man in connection with several vehicle break-ins at a business in eastern Lincoln County.

Detective F. Runyon said the victims were eating lunch at Midtown Sundries in Denver on March 1, 2020 when their vehicles were broken into and credit cards and a firearm were stolen. Detective Runyon located video of one of the credit cards being used at a Walmart in Charlotte,

After reviewing the footage with Charlotte Mecklenburg Police and Mooresville Police, officers were able to identify the suspect as Eric Rashawn Clay, 31, of Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC. On March 11, 2020 warrants were sworn out against Clay charging him with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, financial card theft and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

On March 23, 2020 Charlotte Mecklenburg Police located Clay and arrested him. A search warrant was executed at the residence and items belonging to the victims in Lincoln County were located in the home.

In addition to the Lincoln County charges, outstanding warrants from three other North Carolina counties and South Carolina were served on Clay. He is being held under a $174,500 secured bond.
