STATESVILLE, NC: Statesville Police Chief Joe Barone has announced charges filed against two suspects involved in the January 9, 2018, shootings on Caldwell St. On Thursday, July 5, 2018, the SPD’s Violent Crime Collaborative charged Enrico Dewoine Heggins, 34, Winston Salem, and Rayka Sade Ellis, 24, Salisbury, for their involvement in the shooting.

Heggins is charged with four counts of attempted homicide, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Ellis was charged as an accessory before the fact in connection with the shooting.

Heggins is currently in custody in Davie County following a January raid by Davie County Sheriff’s Office on a motel room during which large quantities of narcotics and firearms were found. He was charged with murder and conspiracy for the January 6th homicide of Freeman Jacobi Wells. Heggins was issued an additional $1 million secured bond for the new charges.

Ellis was arrested in Rowan County by members of the Collaborative, transported to the Iredell County Jail, where a magistrate set a $100,000 secured bond.

Last January, more than 60 rounds were fired into the Caldwell St. dwelling, injuring three people, including a nine-year old girl who has had multiple surgeries.

“The Collaborative’s efforts in this investigation have been tremendous,” said Barone. “I appreciate their work every day, but especially when it results in the successful arrests of suspects.”

These are the first charges filed in connection to the shooting on Caldwell Street and the Collaborative reports that there will be additional suspects charged at a later date.
