Florida cyclist dead following Caldwell County hit-and-run

UPDATE

In reference to a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on US 221 in Caldwell County on Thursday, 10 October, the NC State Highway Patrol is releasing pictures of the suspect vehicle and possible suspect. The images were obtained after receiving a tip that the suspect vehicle was spotted at a gas station in Boone. The charcoal gray 2005-2010 Toyota Sienna minivan will be missing a large piece of the right front bumper, has a significantly damaged windshield on the passenger side, and damage to the passenger side mirror. The rear of the minivan contains numerous stickers to include Batman, YETI, and UNC Tarheel stickers. The possible suspect is a white male, 50-60 years of age, with a white or gray beard, and may be wearing glasses.

The NC State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate, follow-up on leads, and ask for public assistance. Anyone with information is asked to immediately contact the SHP Troop F Communications Center at 828-466-5500 or dial 911.

In reference to a hit & run collision that occurred on US 221 in Caldwell County this past Thursday morning, Ignacio Giraldo, 61, of Sunrise, Florida has died. Giraldo passed away on Saturday, 12 October. The NC State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate, follow-up on leads, and ask for public assistance. Investigators are searching for a charcoal grey 2005-2010 Toyota Sienna minivan which may have damage to the right front, headlight, and/or right front fender area. On Thursday, 10 October 2019, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol (SHP) responded to and is investigating a hit & run collision in Caldwell County on US 221 near Grandfather Mountain. A cyclist was traveling north on US 221. A southbound minivan crossed the double yellow line in a curve, collided head-on with one of the cyclists, and continued without stopping. The injured cyclist has been identified as Ignacio Giraldo, 61, of Sunrise, Florida. He was cycling in a group with his daughter and 2 others. Giraldo was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
