STATESVILLE, NC: The Statesville Police Department became involved as the lead investigating agency in the missing person case of Darwin Lewis (“DJ”) Turner Jr on March 23, 2017 when it was determined by ICSO Detectives that Turner was last seen on March 17th at a residence in the 1900 Block of East Cloaninger Ave off Eastside Dr in Statesville.
On the afternoon of March 27th, acting on information acquired during the investigation into the disappearance of Mr. Turner, SPD Investigators and ICSO Detectives searched a wooded area behind the 1100 Block of Mahogany Rd just east of Statesville. They discovered what appeared to be a possible deceased person buried in a rudimentary grave that appeared to be recently made. For most of the next day, March 28th, SPD, ICSO and the NC State Bureau of Investigation excavated the site and the remains of a deceased black male that were consistent with the description of the missing person, Mr. Turner, were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for autopsy.
On March 30th, 2017, the autopsy confirmed the identity of the deceased person as DJ Turner. The case became a homicide investigation when it was determined that Mr. Turner succumbed to injuries sustained from gunshot wounds.
SPD Investigators, NC SBI Agents, and Investigators with the Violent Crimes Collaborative have worked closely in coordination with District Attorney Sarah Kirkman throughout the investigation and leads were developed that gave probable cause to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Tony John (“TJ”) Young, 28 B/M of West End Ave, Statesville.
On the morning of Wednesday August 22, 2018, Young was located at the Iredell County Courthouse. He was arrested and served with the warrant for the charge of First Degree Murder. Young is currently being held at Iredell County Jail with no bond.
